I’m sure most of us remember picture above, depicting the Houston Police Department beating the shit out of this kid.

“Hundreds of people rallied in Houston on Thursday to protest the acquittal of a former police officer in the videotaped beating of an African-American teenager. On Wednesday, the officer, Andrew Bloomberg, was found not guilty by an all-white jury in the beating and stomping of 15-year-old burglary suspect Chad Holley. Video taken of the March 2010 incident shows Holley being stopped by a police vehicle. After Holley falls to the ground, he is clearly seen surrendering and putting his hands behind his head. But instead of placing him in handcuffs, Bloomberg and six fellow officers proceed to attack Holley with stomps and kicks. “It seems we have become jaded, willing to accept in too many instances, young black people being grossly mistreated,” says NAACP President Ben Jealous.”

But as a white person, I have to ask the question, even though many people will hate me for it:

Was this man beaten because he’s black? Do cops treat white people the same way? As the owner of this police brutality blog, the answer to that question is blatantly YES!

If that was me (a white man) running from police, would they have beaten me as well? YES!

And there you have it. I’m not denying that there MAY have been a racial element to it. But we don’t know that. We must stick to the facts. Those police officers grossly mistreated this man. Those police officers should be severely punished. But I have a hard time swallowing the element of racism just because the cops were white and the kid was black. Give me more evidence of racism and I will gladly concede.

Either way, though. The acquittal of these officers is a blatant disregard for public safety, human rights, civil rights, honesty and justice in the criminal justice system. I am not surprised in the least.
